I saw this story on CNN about a guy who found about 100k worth of stocks in a filing cabinet he picked up for $2 at a yard sale. SWEET!! I love stories like that. He also found the transfer papers that were signed, and just waiting for him to put his name at the top, it just doesn't get better than that.
So the reporter says that "...he never thought twice about keeping the money". Nice, I wouldn't either, finders keepers. Fred, the lucky bastard in this case, goes on to tell of the hard times he's been through, slim pickins for christmas, "hard to put food on the table" and whatnot, so it makes me even happier that he has the chance to cash in.
Then it happened. He says, "To take money away from someone, especially if it was their grandparents or something...it's just not right." WHAT!?!? Then he says "What goes around comes around, if you do the right thing, it balances out." UnReal! Now, I too believe that whole addage, but I on the other hand have the common sense to recognize the karma that's comming around to me. Had I made the find, I wouldn't have thought twice either, it would have been mine. Period.
Why do people always look at something like this as a karmic issue where they need to give back a found sack of cash or something. Why is it that people don't recognize that they might just be due some good karma? This guy sounds like he's had a bit of a rough stretch, why can't he just accept his good fortune and move on? I don't understand that about some people, it's almost like they don't think themselves worthy of something that cool, like they are afraid of it or something. Has this guy ever stopped to think that maybe the loss of this wealth by the previous owners was bad karma comming down on them, and that by returning it, he will upset the balance? It's just as feasable an idea as the one that says he should do the right thing and give it back....maybe after all is said and done, the right thing is to keep the loot.
Don't be afraid to take advantage of good fortune, it happens so rarely in this life that you should embrace it with open arms. Theres no rule that says you always need to be a Martyr.
