I went on a walk around my block tonight. It's not something I do very often, but this was a particularly pleasant evening, and I live in a particularly pleasant neighborhood, so the combination was irresistable, I had to do it. The neighborhood was quiet, like a ghost town, just birds, no cars, no dogs, no people. It was like walking through a soundstage, totally perfect, almost unreal. The net effect was very calming, which is nice, because I usually have alot of noise in my head, it can be pretty crowded in there sometimes.
One of the things I contemplated was that I was so in love with the feeling I had down in Guatemala. It was so peaceful, friendly, non American in that it wasn't stressed and frenzied. There were some really beutiful parts, but most of the residential areas were admitedly slums. I thought about this as I walked around my movie set of a neighborhood, pondering why I didn't feel the same way when I was home. Why is it that in Guatemala, owning a 204 mph Mercedes seemed laughably stupid, but here....you seem incomplete without one?
I also pondered my latest time occupying obsession, the presidential race. I already know who I'm voting for, nothing will change my position on that, yet I'm totally caught up in the minute by minute goings on of the race. It's retarded when you think about it. What does it really matter who the president is? It only matters because they tell you it matters. What was the last thing that a president has ever done that has had a direct affect on your well being? Wire tapping, Guantanamo, taxes, the war....honestly, none of that even touches me here in my bubble. I'm sure if you really think about it, honestly think about it, you'll find that the president has about as much affect on your day to day life as the winner of the Oscar for best actor.
I'm giving up on caring about that issue. I'm done. I'm going to focus on bringing my Guatemala feeling here to The Woodlands, find out why I was so relaxed, why the head was so quiet, and make that happen here.
