Adventures with the Phone Company

Well, we are doing it, we are moving into the 21st century and disconnecting our land line phone service.  Freaky.  I havn't been without a land line in my whole life, but now....mobile only!

The problem that I have is that I need internet, this site for instance is hosted out of my office upstairs...and I work on the internet, and well, I just need it.  Previously, ATT didn't offer a dry line internet service, but for some reason, they have changed policy, and so we can dump the land line.  Doing it was a bit of a process, but heres what I learned on the phone wit the ATT rep.

I have a dsl line with 5 static IP addresses, for this little luxury, I pay $79 a month.  I get like 3mb down and 512 up.  With the dry line, I'm only going to get 2mb down and 360 up or something like that, don't know why, but that's the deal.  I also learned that if I didn't have my static ips, that package would be like $30 a month.  Holy Shit!!!!  Almost $50 a month for IP addresses??  WTF?

Then I learned that if I order ATT Universal, I get a fiber line to the house with 10mb down and 5mb up. Wow!  But I already have direct tv.  No prob they tell me, universal has a 30 day money back garantee, and the fiber is already laid at that point, so internet service goes to $50 a month...for fiber...but with dynamic ip if  decide I don't want the tv service.

Hmmm...need to investigate dyndns me thinks.  I'm getting jobbed on those ip addresses.
